Ze had in maart gezegd dat ze hem nooit zou vrijgeven, maar volgens haar woordvoerder stemt de Democratische presidentskandidaat Hillary Clinton er nu mee in dat haar privéserver voor onderzoek aan de FBI wordt overhandigd. De FBI had vastgesteld dat 2 top secret berichten op de server waren beland.
De controverse slaat op de periode tussen 2009 en 2013 toen Hillary Clinton minister van Buitenlandse Zaken was. Ze bleef, tegen de richtlijnen in, ook voor haar werk haar privé-e-mailadres gebruiken, via een privéserver, die in haar huis staat en die ze deelt met haar echtgenoot, ex-president Bill Clinton (die er prat op gaat dat hij in zijn leven maar 2 mails heeft verstuurd). Dat gaf problemen voor het archief van haar ministerie, dat de mails opvroeg, en het leidde ook tot kritiek bij Republikeinen, die opperden dat Hillary informatie en mails achterhield in verband met de Benghazi-crisis – waarbij Al-Qaeda-leden onder meer de Amerikaanse ambassadeur in Libië ombrachten.

• SI refers to Special Intelligence, meaning it is information derived from intercepted communications, which is the business of the National Security Agency, America’s single biggest source of intelligence.
TK refers to Talent Keyhole, which is an IC caveat indicating that the classified material was obtained via satellite.
• NOFORN, as the name implies, means that the materials can only be shown to Americans, not to foreigners.
